Checkers rules

Objective

Capture all of your opponent's pieces, or leave them with no legal move.

Setup

  • American checkers on an 8x8 board. Each player starts with 12 pieces on the dark squares of their first three rows.

Moving and capturing

  • A regular piece moves one square diagonally forward onto an empty dark square.
  • Capture by jumping diagonally over an adjacent enemy piece onto the empty square beyond it.
  • Captures are mandatory. If a jump is available, you must take it.
  • After a jump, keep jumping with the same piece while further captures are available. The chain is one move.

Kings

  • A piece that reaches the far row is crowned a king. Crowning ends the move, even in the middle of a jump chain.
  • Kings move and capture diagonally both forward and backward.

Draws

  • On your turn you can offer a draw. The offer stands through your opponent's turn: they can accept it, or decline simply by moving.
  • Forty moves each with no capture and no regular piece moving ends the game drawn, so two kings can never circle forever.

Series, rematches and your record

  • A match is a series. Checkers defaults to a single game. You can pick a single game or best of 3, 5 or 7 when you open the lobby. The first player to win a majority of rounds takes it.
  • The opening move alternates every round. Drawn rounds score nobody, and a series that keeps drawing ends after twice its length.
  • Between rounds there is a short break, then the next round deals on its own. Tap Next round to skip ahead.
  • Resigning concedes the whole series. When it ends, either player can call a rematch; once both accept, a new series deals with the seats swapped.
  • Every series counts toward your all-time head to head against that player, your win streak in that game, and your rank: Rookie, Contender, Hustler, Shark, Kingpin, Legend.

Lobbies, turns and timers

  • Open a lobby, choose your options, then share the invite link or the 8-character room code. Invite-only lobbies stay closed to anyone you did not invite.
  • Every move runs on a 45-second clock. Let it lapse and you forfeit the game, so stay on the board.
  • Leave whenever you like. The host can end the match at any point, and a finished lobby reopens with the same seats for a rematch.

Bold Points stakes (optional)

  • When you open the lobby you can play free or set a stake from 10 to 1,000 Bold Points per player.
  • Stakes are held in escrow when the match starts. The winner takes the pot; a draw or an aborted match returns every stake.
  • Stake winnings are capped at 5,000 Bold Points per member per day.

Strategy and tips

  1. Keep your back row intact as long as you can. It stops early kings.
  2. Use forced captures against your opponent: offer a piece to pull theirs into a double jump.
  3. Trade pieces when you are ahead. Fewer pieces make your advantage bigger.

Checkers FAQ

Are captures mandatory?

Yes. This is American checkers: if you can jump, you must, and multi-jumps continue while captures remain.

Can kings move backward?

Yes. Once crowned at the far row, a king moves and captures in all four diagonal directions.

Can a game of checkers end in a draw?

Yes. Offer a draw on your turn and your opponent can accept, or the game draws itself after forty moves each without a capture or a regular piece moving.

Is it free?

Yes. Every game on Bold18 is free to play. A free Bold account is needed to open or join a lobby.
